How can schools be improved?

There are two kinds of answers, (1) in existing classrooms, (2) by re-jigging the system.
To improve the work in existing classrooms it is necessary to “get through” to students better and get them to understand the topics of the curriculum. (2) involves much analysis of what society really wants.

The PER Group, a forum for re-thinking the roots of education

Education used to be regarded by almost everybody as an easy, open book. But profound changes in society and in the arrival of IT have turned it into an enigma. Words used to be memorized, prized and valued. Today they are being freely bandied about by the thousand by a myriad of different “sources” and “voices”. Everyone
has to cope with a daily deluge of words, some good, but many of dubious provenance.

What is affecting the system?

Many profound changes have happened in the last fifty years. Belief has faded away and lost its previous influence on the average family. TV has revealed the way celebrities live. Deference and authority have been debunked repeatedly. PCs and smartphones have taken the mystique out of knowing. Education --- a very long term project --- needs patience confidence and determination; all in short supply.

Looking for the way out of the muddled mindset which has turned teaching into a struggle and schools into exam factories?

In today’s fast changing, burgeoning world it is almost impossible to keep your feet on the ground and establish a solid foundation
as a basis for thinking. This is what the PER Group offers ---through its lectures, seminars, journal, newsletter and occasional Reports.
