Do you want to join the campaign to radically change the education system?

The PER Group has been thinking, discussing and analyzing for 24 years what is going wrong with the education system ---its gross mismatch to what young people need in the 21st century. Some analysis will continue, but the emphasis of the Group is switching to getting the message across.

What is the essence of the changes needed?

Schooling as we know it is accustomed to “stand back” from the individual child or student. It tries to be neutral and non-judgmental because the students are from a multicultural background. But this neutrality is an own goal. The media don’t “stand back”. Advertisers don’t “stand back”. Political parties don’t “stand back”. Education needs to become more personal and involving for the average child if it is to do its job of implanting important life-long messages.

What can we do?

The first principle is that schooling in a democracy is accountable to the democratic constituency. Teachers have no divine right to teach what they or their friends personally believe. We need to press for a Great Debate about what should be taught and how. We need the Government to convene a Commission of trusted thinkers to determine what the “enduring classless non-political culture consists of” --- it has fallen out of sight during the last few confused decades.

Changing the system

At the deepest level education should transmit the gist of the “enduring classless, non-political culture” to youth. (Also new stuff which will endure.) Change can’t come in a flash. To get through to students
in a more personal way means that we need (1) a deeply agreed non-political curriculum and teaching style (2) teachers who are fully committed to it. Much groundwork needs to be done before teachers can be inducted into the new emphases.
