Essence

Fundamental thinking about education

The challenge facing today’s youth is much greater than that which earlier generations had to bear. The world has become much more complex and much harder to “read” than it used to be. The government and politicians have often talked as if the internet solves all educational problem: it is just a question, they think, of getting youngsters online. But words have become devalued by the sheer number of them being thrown about on the media and the internet. So the strong habits needed to create the basis for education are harder to implant in today’s youth. Building a picture of the world requires priorities, but for forty years the education system has been trying to be as valuefree and non-judgmental as possible.

Getting the priorities right

The internet is about as “educative” as walking about in a vast, confusing city. Youngsters need a foreground focus and a more personal, upfront approach than schools have been accustomed to providing. Only in this way can one create a vivid foreground which enables each youngster to keep the infinity-of-confusing-information out there at arm’s length. Then the basic conditions for learning obtain.

Create opportunities for yourself

While talent plays an integral role in one’s life, education helps to realise one’s true potential. In addition to helping you chase your dreams; it also makes you self-dependant and gives you the confidence to express your views. Creating priorities

Schools are not there to solve the world’s problems. Their job is much more limited, to develop the child or student’s mind. The strength of a student’s mind is shown by the questions she or he asks. But it is important not to blunt this curiosity by throwing students prematurely into deeply baffling areas. There are many controversial topics which it is not the job of schools to tackle. Rather they need to start with a simple agenda which makes good sense to them, in their terms. Challenges are first met, and overcome, in such a sheltered context. Gradually the child gains confidence in her or his own
ability. Strong groundrules are also needed including a consensus secular Moral Code.
